Lewis Sikes
Lewis Calvin Sikes, 84, of Attica, Ind., died at Regency Place in Lafayette, Ind., Thursday, June 19, 2008.
He was born in Mayville, N.D., Sept. 3, 1923, son of the late Louis Jackson and Josie Janette Ledbetter Sikes.
Lewis graduated from barber school in 1959 in Decatur, Ill. He worked on his father's farm east of Attica and later owned and operated Lew's Barbershop at 424 S. Fourth St. in Lafayette for 17 years. From 1978 to 1989 Lewis worked at Purdue University until his retirement.
He was a member of Lafayette First Christian Church, and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
Lewis and Mary Gertrude Knowles were married June 11, 1944, in Attica. She preceded him in death May 18, 2000.
Surviving are two sons, Edward Eugene (Carolyn) Sikes of Lafayette, Lewis Paul Sikes of West Lafayette, Ind.; two daughters, Waunita L. VanDyke of Cape Girardeau, Peggy Jo (George) Clawson of Lafayette; five grandchildren, Sheila Stingle, Elizabeth and Daniel Sikes, Jodie and Richard Lee Clawson; four great-grandchildren, Brooke and Tiffany Stingle, Lois Eades and Bill Clawson; a brother, Ardell Jackson Sikes of Bradenton, Fla.; and a sister, Georgia Vernabel (John) Moran of Bradenton.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, William VanDyke; four brothers and a sister.
Friends may call from 1 p.m. until service time at 3 p.m. EDT Sunday at Maus Funeral Home in Attica, with Connie Schultz officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Cemetery at Attica.
Memorial contributions are preferred to Lafayette First Christian Church.
