CAIRO, Ill. -- Lewis S. Edwards, 90, of Cairo died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 13, 1909, at Paducah, Ky., son of George and Margaret Brown Edwards.
Edwards served for many years on the Cairo Fire Department, as fire chief before his retirement. He was also deputy fire marshal for the state of Illinois. He was associated with Barkett Funeral Home for 22 years. Edwards was a member of the VFW and Washington Avenue Baptist Church in Cairo.
He was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Baker of Cairo; two sons, William "Bill" Lockett and Ronald M. Lockett of Tamms; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Edwards.
Friends may call at the Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo after 5 p.m. on Monday.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Richard Pigg officiating. Burial will be in the U.S. National Cemetery at Mound City.
