DONGOLA, Ill. -- Lewis Hanford Kaufman, 87, of Dongola died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at his home.
He was born May 25, 1916, in Dongola, son of Lewis and Naomi Karraker Kaufman. He and Marella Penrod were married Aug. 19, 1942.
Kaufman received a bachelor of music from Abilene Christian University and attended Pepperdine University.
He retired as owner and operator of Kaufman Produce. He was mayor two terms, served on the board of education, Friendship Cemetery Board, and Delta Foundation. He was a member and elder of Wetaug Church of Christ.
Kaufman was in the U.S. Marine Corps and then was a fighter pilot during World War II in the South Pacific.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Janet Davis of Lake Holiday, Ill., Ann Van Loon of Rowlett, Texas; a son, Jim Kaufman of Quinlan, Texas; a sister, Aline Karraker of Murray, Ky.; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant son and a brother.
Friends may call at Crain Funeral Home in Dongola from 5 to 8 p.m. today, and Friday until time of service.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with John Shelton officiating. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery.
