JACKSON -- Leonard F. Sander, 79, of Jackson, died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Sander, former First District Cape County Commissioner and Jackson businessman, suffered a heart attack June 15. He was born Dec. 21, 1918, at Tilsit, son of C.H. and Olga Sander. JACKSON -- Leonard F. Sander, 79, of Jackson, died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

Sander, former First District Cape County Commissioner and Jackson businessman, suffered a heart attack June 15.

He was born Dec. 21, 1918, at Tilsit, son of C.H. and Olga Sander. He and Aleene Illers were married March 20, 1938.

Sander was a businessman in Jackson 42 years, and was a Cape Girardeau County officeholder 20 years. He was elected circuit clerk of Cape Girardeau County in 1970. In 1976 he was elected to the office of First District Cape County Judge, which was changed in 1984 to office of the First District Cape County Commissioner.

He was a member of New McKendree United Methodist Church, and had served on the administrative board and the board of trustees. He served in the North and South Pacific with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, L. Fritz Sander of Edina, Minn., Mayor Paul W. Sander of Jackson; a brother, Charles Sander of Jackson; a sister, Shirley Dippold of Cape Girardeau; and four grandchildren.

Friends may call at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at New McKendree Church. Burial will be in Russell Heights Cemetery.
