Leonard Militzer

ALTENBURG, Mo. -- Leonard Edward "Dick" Militzer, 91, of Altenburg passed peacefully from this world into the next at his home Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012.

He was born April 19, 1921, to G. Edward and C. Aline Stemmerman Militzer. He and Dorothea Emilie Fiehler were married Nov. 16, 1947.

Leonard proudly served in the United States Army during World War II, from Dec. 2, 1942, to Dec. 21, 1945, seeing military action in Europe and earning a Purple Heart and other awards.

Following the war, Leonard engaged in farming, which was his true vocation. He also worked for the Missouri Department of Transportation 25 years, from which he retired.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 65 years, Dorothea Militzer; four daughters, Emily Militzer, Annette (Kenneth) Glatz, Ellen (George) Delmar and Margaret (Mark) Leitner. He was loved by his eight grandchildren and their spouses as well as six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Norma Brockman, and a brother, Willard Militzer.

Leonard was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant sister, Ona Militzer.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Young and Sons East Perry Chapel in Altenburg, Mo.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altenburg, with the Rev. Jonathan Stites officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with military rites by VFW Post 4282 and Missouri Delta Team.

Memorial contributions may be given in his honor to Southeast Hospice or Immanuel Lutheran Church in Altenburg.
