Leonard Koenig, 93, of Jackson passed away Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019, at Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Oct. 30, 1925, in New Wells, son of Martin R. and Ella Scholl Koenig. He and Alene Olinda Birk were married April 11, 1948. She passed away April 30, 2002.

Leonard was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in New Wells. He became a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson when he and Alene were married in 1948. He enlisted into the Navy on Oct. 19, 1944, and was honorably discharged April 30, 1946. Leonard started working for Coca-Cola Bottling Co. in Jackson in the early 1950s, retiring in 1987 after nearly 35 years. He then worked for Cape Girardeau County Park in Cape Girardeau for a number of years. Leonard was a member of the American Legion Post No. 158 in Jackson.

He had a passion for gardening and always had one of the prettiest gardens in town. He was always good to share his garden harvests with family and friends. Leonard was known as a fun and kind gentleman who never met a stranger. He was a friend to many whom will be missed.

Loving survivors include sons, Larry (Tamara) Koenig and Terry (Vickie) Koenig, both of Jackson; grandchildren, Andrew (Caitlin) Koenig of St. Louis, Austin (Taylor) Koenig of St. Peters, Missouri, Terry "T.K." (Jessica) Koenig of Oran, Missouri, and Jessica (Chris) Simmons of Jackson; great-grandchildren, Tristen Koenig, Jacob and Luke Simmons; and great-stepgrandchildren, Jonathon and Jada Tyler.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years and two sisters, Irene and Virgie.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Gary Hoffstetter officiating. Interment, with miitary honors, will follow in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to St. Paul Lutheran Church Building Fund or charity of choice.
