SIKESTON, Mo. -- Leon O. Garnett, 96, of Sikeston died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2000, at Missouri Delta Medical Center.
He was born March 3, 1904, in Sturgeon, Mo., son of Marvin Taylor and Mary Alice Bowne Garnett. He and Dorothy Marie Buckey were married in 1936 at Ironton, Mo. She died in 1957. He and Aleta Wallace Pinkstaff were married in 1959 at Sikeston.
Garnett was a 1917 graduate of Sturgeon High School, received a bachelor of arts degree from Central Methodist College at Fayette, Mo., in 1921, a degree in physical education from Central Missouri State University at Warrensburg, Mo., in 1926, and later received a master's degree in arts and education.
He was a teacher and coach at schools in Lincoln, Mo., and Elvins, Mo., and then taught physical education in LaJunta, Colo. Garnett worked for Missouri Division of Employment Security from 1938-69, retiring as office manager. He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife; a stepson, James Pinkstaff of Columbia, Mo.; four stepgrandchildren; and four great-stepgrandchildren.
Friends may call at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel from 5-8 p.m. today.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the chapel, with Dr. Jim Davis and Dr. Jim Guffie officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
