Lawrence O. Kassel, 71, of Cape Girardeau died Sunday, March 3, 1996, at Cape Girardeau Nursing Center.

He was born March 16, 1924, at Cape Girardeau to Charles G. and Amanda D. Schlimme Kassel.

On Jan. 1, 1954, he married Nadine L. Sims, who died Nov. 25, 1959. He Married Jerry Starzinger Godwin June 10, 1978.

He was a chief engineer for General Dynamics Barge Line. He worked on the Mississippi River for 36 years.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Egypt Mills, where he served as church treasurer.

Survivors are his wife; one son, Michael Kassel of Cape Girardeau; two daughters, Ann Lunsford and Jane Moore, both of Bartlesville, Okla.; four sisters, Edna Hafner, Erma Harmon and Dorothy McLain, all of Cape Girardeau, and Hazel McLain of St. Louis.

Three brothers and two sisters also preceded him in death.

Visitation is today from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel.

Service will be Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Mark Martin officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park in Cape Girardeau.
