Laurie Bey Pontillas, 35, of Seattle died Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017, in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Mexico.
She was born Aug. 2, 1981, in Perryville, Missouri, daughter of Job Pontillas and Carolyn Bey Hardaway.
She was a 1999 graduate of Perryville High School and a 2004 graduate of Washington University in St. Louis. She was a certified TOEFL instructor and had been employed as a teacher of English as a second language at Kaplan International and City University in Seattle. She was an advocate for Latino immigrant rights and a donor and active volunteer at Casa Latina in Seattle. Most recently she worked at Na'atik Cultural and Language Institute in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, teaching English.
She was an avid cook and music lover.
Survivors include both parents; one grandmother, Shea Bey; one sister and one brother, Maria (Rory) Shackles of Tacoma, Washington, and Ryan (Annie Sklar) Pontillas of Denver; and one niece, Piper Shackles.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Paul Bey, and great-aunt, Gertrude Bey.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Young and Sons Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Milton Ryan CM officiating. Burial to be at Mount Hope Cemetery.
Memorials are preferred for Casa Latina, Seattle; and Na'atik Cultural and Language Institute, Mexico.
