Laura Crews Lewis, 79, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at the Lutheran Home. She was born Oct. 31, 1921, at Shawneetown, Mo., daughter of George Clarence and Clara Shoults Hensley. She first married Issac H. Crews in 1940, who preceded her in death. She then married Lt. Col. James Lewis in 1966. He also preceded her in death...

Laura Crews Lewis, 79, of Cape Girardeau died Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at the Lutheran Home.

She was born Oct. 31, 1921, at Shawneetown, Mo., daughter of George Clarence and Clara Shoults Hensley. She first married Issac H. Crews in 1940, who preceded her in death. She then married Lt. Col. James Lewis in 1966. He also preceded her in death.

Lewis owned and operated Crews Interior Designs from 1947-77, then was an interior designer at Rust & Martin.

She was a professional quilt designer and won international awards for her designs. She taught quilting and interior design at Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center.

Lewis was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church, its choir, and was a Stephen minister. Other memberships include American Quilters Society, American International Quilt Association, National Quilting Association Inc., and Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include a daughter, Kay Fullerton of Dallas, Texas; two stepsons, Randall Lewis of Carbondale, Ill., Michael Lewis of Marion, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Susan Denton of Benton, Ill.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel from 4-8 p.m. today.

Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Andrew Church. The Rev. Paul Short will officiate. Burial will be in Apple Creek Cemetery at Pocahontas, Mo.
