Larry Uptmor, 70, of Cape Girardeau, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 1999, at his home.
He was born May 24, 1929, in Chicago, Ill., son of Urban Lawrence and Edna Kiefer Uptmor.
He and Lucy Hemmen were married July 8, 1950, in Lilleyville, Ill. He and Cynthia Fuelle were married May 26, 1985, in Rockford, Ill.
Uptmor lived most of his life in Teutopolis, Ill. He moved to Cape Girardeau four years ago. Previously, he had lived 11 years in Phoenix, Ariz.
Uptmor attended high school seminary in Carthage and joined the U.S. Navy. He served from 1946 to 1948 and received a World War II Victory Medal for his service.
He graduated from Eastern Illinois University and earned a master's degree from the University of Illinois. He taught music and science at Teutopolis High School.
He worked as a part-time bus driver for Greyhound Bus Lines for 25 years. He taught music and instrumentals in junior high schools for five years while living in Phoenix. He was a captain in the Civil Air Patrol, having served from 1985 to 1995.
He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church and was a member of Kiwanis, Elks and Knights of Columbus Council 1111.
Survivors include his wife; seven sons, Urban L. "Sonny" Uptmor of Effingham, Ill., Robert Uptmor of Dayton, Ohio, Michael D. Uptmor of Lincoln University, Pa., Eric Uptmor of Lebanon, Ohio, John Uptmor of Peoria, Ill., Thomas Uptmor of Teutopolis, and David Uptmor of the home; five daughters, Judy Miller of Charlotsville, Va., Susan Goldstein of Mattoon, Ill., Ann Nguyen of Palo Alto, Calif., Kathy Uptmor of Teutopolis, and Sarah Uptmor of the home; two sisters, Anne Rogers of Wheeling, Ill., and Doris Sliga of Glenwood, Ill., and 25 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother.
Visitation will be from 4:30-7 p.m. today at St. Vincent de Paul Church.
Funeral Mass will be at 7 p.m. at the church, with the Rev. Milton Ryan officiating.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at St. Frances of Assissi Church in Teutopolis. A wake service will be held at 7 p.m
At 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, a funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis of Assissi Church, with the Rev. Ryan officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery.
