CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Lanie G. "Leather" Black, 84, of Charleston died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at East Prairie Nursing Home. He was born July 9, 1918 at Naylor, Mo., son of Lanie G. and Sara Oliver Black Sr. He and Sue Belle Whitehead were married July 11, 1945. She died Oct. 5, 1973...

CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Lanie G. "Leather" Black, 84, of Charleston died Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at East Prairie Nursing Home.

He was born July 9, 1918 at Naylor, Mo., son of Lanie G. and Sara Oliver Black Sr. He and Sue Belle Whitehead were married July 11, 1945. She died Oct. 5, 1973.

Black retired from farming in 1978. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Corps. Black was a member of the United Methodist Church in Charleston and an active business and civic leader in the community.

Survivors include two sons, Lanie G. and Monroe Black, and two daughters-in-law, all of Charleston; two sisters, Caroline Morgan of Denver, Colo., and Sally Looms of Taos, N.M.; and two grandsons.

He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Friends may call at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, with full military graveside rites.
