Kermit W. Gerhardt, 89, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, June 8, 1999, at Missouri Veterans Home.
He was born Dec. 4, 1909, at Old Appleton, son of Julius W. and Rosalia Woeltje Gerhardt. He and Ernestine Miller were married Aug. 2, 1941. She died Sept. 17, 1995.
Gerhardt and his father began a construction business in 1925. They constructed many buildings in Southeast Missouri. Some of those include the Southeast Missourian Newspaper building; and several buildings at Southeast Missouri State University, including Magill Hall of Science.
He was also instrumental in restoring Old McKendree Chapel in Jackson.
Gerhardt was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, VFW Post 3838, and the Elks Lodge.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Survivors include two sons, Ronald Gerhardt of St. Louis, Kermit Gerhardt II of Jackson; a brother, William Gerhardt of Ashville, N.C.; two sisters, Sally Clayton of Cape Girardeau, Betty Boyd of Joplin; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by three brothers.
There is no visitation or service.
McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau is in charge of arrangements.
