JACKSON -- J.W. Proffer, 73, of Jackson, died Sunday, Dec. 26, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Dec. 8, 1926, at Crump, son of Jess and Abby (Proffer) Proffer.
Proffer was employed at the International Shoe Co. in Jackson and later was a riverboat deckhand on the Ann King boat. He was veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Navy.
Survivors include two sons, Bruce Proffer of Sedgewickville and W.J. Proffer, Freidheim; four daughters, Ella Jean Moore and Dorothy Sides, both of Oak Ridge, Doris Jones and Jackie Proffer, both of Millersville; a brother, Troy Proffer, Jackson; two sisters, Lucille Rhodes of Whitewater and Ruth Taylor of Burfordville; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
Service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at McCombs Funeral Chapel in Jackson with the Rev. Mike Huffman officiating. Interment will be the Proffer Cemetery at Crump.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 4 to 8 p.m.
