Judge Edward Calvin

Judge Edward Eugene Calvin, 73, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2004, at St. Francis Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 13, 1931, in Burlington, Colo., son of Asa Everett and Helen Marguerite Evans Calvin. He and Barbara Nichols were married June 14, 1953, in Sidney, Iowa.

Mr. Calvin was a graduate of the University of Iowa, and received his juris doctorate from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He was admitted to the bar in 1956.

He was a past municipal judge for the city of Scott City and the city of Cape Girardeau. He was currently serving as disqualification judge for the city of Cape Girardeau; was an attorney in Cape Girardeau, Poplar Bluff and Richmond, Mo.; and an attorney for the U.S. Corps of Engineers.

Mr. Calvin was a member, past elder and deacon of First Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, member and past president of Kiwanis Club, and a past MoArk District lieutenant governor for Kiwanis. He was an original member of the Charter Commission for city of Cape Girardeau.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1959.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gregory Edward Calvin of Nashville, Tenn., Whitney Nichols Calvin of Jackson; a daughter, Lt. Cmdr. Jennifer Helen Calvin, USN, of Bremerton, Wash.; a sister, Mildred Ruth Scales of Albia, Iowa; five grandchildren, Bryce Abasolo and Erin Abasolo of North Richland Hills, Texas, Melinda Calvin, Mary Calvin and Mark Calvin, all of Jackson.

There is no visitation.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Paul Kabo Jr. will officiate. A private committal service will be held at Cape County Memorial Park.

Ford and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to Chateau Girardeau Foundation, First Presbyterian Church Building Renovation Fund or the Salvation Army.
