OAK RIDGE -- J.R. Evans, 85, of Oak Ridge died at the Jackson Manor Nursing home Sunday, Nov. 3, 1996. He was born Oct. 22, 1911, at Morley, the son of Cleve and Dora Mae Mull Evans. He first married Isabel Slinkard. She died Feb. 17, 1972. He then married Cretia Doughty. She died May 15, 1979...

OAK RIDGE -- J.R. Evans, 85, of Oak Ridge died at the Jackson Manor Nursing home Sunday, Nov. 3, 1996.

He was born Oct. 22, 1911, at Morley, the son of Cleve and Dora Mae Mull Evans.

He first married Isabel Slinkard. She died Feb. 17, 1972. He then married Cretia Doughty. She died May 15, 1979.

He is survived by a son, Jack Evans of Scott City; three daughters, Jean Kurre and Jill Myer, both of Jackson, and Susan Estes of Gravel Hill; two sisters, Mary Sebaugh of Daisy and Gloria Dumey of Oak Ridge; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son and daughter.

He was a heavy equipment operator and a member of Local 520 in Belleville, Ill. He retired in November 1972.

He had lived at Alton, Ill, from 1959 to 1964, and lived at Moberly from 1980 to 1993, before moving to Jackson and then to Oak Ridge.

He raised quarter horses from 1972 to 1980.

Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson, with the Rev. Jon Sedgwick officiating.

Burial will be in Valhalla Cemetery in Alton.

Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. today.
