Joyce Ellen Kowal, 68, of Canton, Ill., died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007, at her home.
She was born April 4, 1938, at Oran, Mo., daughter of Herschel and Maggie Belle Warner Fisher. She was adopted by Theodore and Elsie Fisher and grew up in Cape Girardeau.
Kowal left Cape Girardeau in 1955 but moved back in 1990 after 27 years in Chicago. She moved to Canton in late 2006.
She had been a nurse's aide at Saint Francis Medical Center, and also was a technician for an electrical parts manufacturing firm. She was formerly a member of Southside Baptist Church, a Sunday school teacher and assisted five years with the Senior Ladies. She was known as "the Bread Lady of South Cape."
Survivors include three brothers, William Fisher of Bonne Terre, Mo., Don Shelton of St. Peters, Mo., Ron Shelton of Farmington, Mo.; four sisters, Bonnie Schott of Oran, Judith Kalafut and Julia Woods of Chaffee, and Diane Moore of Cape Girardeau.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and a sister.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
