SIKESTON -- Johnie J. Abernathy, 77, of Sikeston died after an extended illness Wednesday, July 19, 1995, at his home.

He was born Feb. 24, 1918, at Kennett, son of Henry William and Levadie Mae Hoxworth Abernathy. He married Helen Ruth Fisk on June 16, 1937, at Sikeston.

Abernathy was a truck driver for the McKnight-Keaton Grocery Co. in Sikeston. He moved to Sikeston in 1979, after retiring from the Chevrolet plant of General Motors Corp. in St. Louis.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a member of the United Pentecostal Church in Sikeston.

Survivors include: his wife; a son, Harold E. Abernathy of Florissant; a daughter, Brenda Kay Tubb of Florissant; two brothers, Leroy and Bob Abernathy, both of Morley; six sisters, Mary Carver of Zalma, Fern Thomas of Oran, Tinia Clark of Dexter, Pretshie Ellsworth of Pensacola, Fla., Maudie Denton and Violet Farmer, both of Sikeston; five grandchildren and a great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Pentecostal Church, with the Rev. Richard Whitman officiating. Burial will be at New Morley Cemetery.
