ADVANCE, Mo. -- John Wright Tippett, 87, of Advance died Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, in Memphis, Tenn. He was born Feb. 2, 1923, in Swinton, Mo., the son of William Sherman and Elsa Sims Tippett. Tippett was a graduate of Advance High School and a member of the 1941 varsity Advance basketball team that placed third in the state tournament. He was a salesman for Hart's Bread and also a member of the Advance First Baptist Church. Tippett was veteran of World War II...

ADVANCE, Mo. -- John Wright Tippett, 87, of Advance died Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, in Memphis, Tenn.

He was born Feb. 2, 1923, in Swinton, Mo., the son of William Sherman and Elsa Sims Tippett.

Tippett was a graduate of Advance High School and a member of the 1941 varsity Advance basketball team that placed third in the state tournament. He was a salesman for Hart's Bread and also a member of the Advance First Baptist Church. Tippett was veteran of World War II.

He and Maxine Bollinger were united in marriage and she preceded him in death on Jan. 28, 2006.

Survivors include two sons; Terry Tippett of Germantown, Tenn., and Mark Tippett of New York; one daughter, Gwen Hannah of Memphis, Tenn.; one grandchild; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, a grandson; and his parents.

Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. today at Morgan Funeral Home in Advance.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at the chapel, with the Rev. Eric Shrum officiating.

Burial will be at Morgan Memorial Park in Advance.
