John Smothers
John Smothers, 82, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at his home.
He was born Nov. 29, 1926, in Thebes, Ill., son of Thomas Reed and Rosa Ellen Dunning Smothers. He was first married to Ruth Apostol. He and Eva Gregg were married Feb. 23, 1980, in Cape Girardeau.
Smothers was a night supervisor with the U.S. Postal Service 30 years, retiring in January 2005. He was a member of Maple United Methodist Church. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 3838, Eagles Aerie 3775 and Cairo Lodge 237 in Cairo, Ill.
He served with the U.S. Army in the Philippines from Feb. 1, 1945, to Dec. 9, 1946.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Rick Smith of Cape Girardeau and Bryan Apostol of Caseyville, Ill.
He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
Friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jim Cooper officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park with graveside honors conducted by VFW Post 3838 and Missouri Honors Team.
