Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Robert Henrichs officiating. Burial will be in Russell Heights Cemetery...

JACKSON -- John David Slinkard, 63, of Jackson died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.

Friends may call at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson from 4-8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Robert Henrichs officiating. Burial will be in Russell Heights Cemetery.

Friends may call at the church after 1 p.m. Sunday.

He was born June 16, 1936, in Allenville, son of the late Weldon and Amelia Brucker Slinkard. He and Edna Lee Schneider were married Nov. 20, 1955, at Zion Lutheran Church in Gordonville.

Slinkard was confirmed at Zion Lutheran.

He was a 1954 graduate of Jackson High School. In 1958 he received an honorable discharge from the 140th Infantry National Guard Army.

During the 1950s and early 1960s he was a welder at Missouri Dry Dock. In 1962 he became self-employed, establishing Slinkard Construction Co. He built several KFVS Dream Homes. In 1990 he became a subcontractor for numerous local contractors. After his disability in 1995 he continued to be a building consultant.

He formerly served as a Boy Scout leader for a group from Sikeston. His farm featured Camp Ridgeway, a private camp where numerous boys earned merit badges in livestock and survival.

In 1988 he transferred church membership from Immanuel Lutheran in Perryville to St. Paul in Jackson. He was a former member of St. Paul Men's Club and the dart ball team.

Loving survivors include his wife, Edna Lee of Jackson; a son and daughter-in-law, John David and Tami Slinkard II of Holland, Mich.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Robin LeeAnn and Drew White of Cape, Christy Montgomery and Michael Withrow of Plano, Texas, Kelly Lynne and David Ard of Truxton, Mo.; a foster son, Lee Allen Phillips and wife, Susie, of Perryville; a brother, James M. Slinkard of Jackson; four sisters, Ruth Ann Hobeck of Jackson, Wanda Lee Stone of Daisy, Mary Lou Hanners of Jackson, Sharon K. Eldridge of Cape; 10 grandchildren, Jacob and Chelsea White; Melanie and Erich Montgomery; Samatha Withrow; Trista and Wesley Anderson; Nicholas Slinkard; and Zachry and Leah Phillips.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. Paul Lutheran Building Fund or Southeast Hospice.
