John Schwab

John A. Schwab, 62, of Cape Girardeau passed away Monday, May 9, 2005, at Saint Francis Medical Center.

He was born March 4, 1943, in Cape Girardeau, son of Arthur "Hatz" and Nellie Stroder Schwab. After his mother died he was raised by his stepmother, Barbara Jarosik Schwab. He and Marilyn Nagel were married Nov. 25, 1965, in Cape Girardeau.

Mr. Schwab was inducted into the U.S. Army in June 1969, and was honorably discharged in June 1972 as a Specialist 5. He served 18 months in Nurnenberg, Germany.

John graduated from Central High School in 1960, and from Southeast Missouri State University in 1965 with a bachelor of science degree. He taught junior high at Egyptian School District in Tamms, Ill., until retiring in 1998. During the summer he did construction work and operated his own business, Xylem Works.

He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in 1959. He transferred to St. Andrew Lutheran where he was a former youth leader and member of Church Property Committee. He was a member of American Legion Post 63 in Cape Girardeau, and had been a subcommittee member of SEMO District Fair Board since 1998.

Loving survivors include his wife; a daughter, Ginger Schwab of Sanford, Fla.; a brother, Jerry L. Schwab and wife Carolyn of Cape Girardeau; and an aunt, Betty Shackles of St. Charles, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother.

Friends may call at McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau from 4 to 8 p.m. today, and at St. Andrew Lutheran Church after 9:30 a.m. Thursday. An American Legion service will be held at 7 tonight.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul Short officiating. Interment will be in Cape County Memorial Park, with graveside rites by Missouri Military Honor Guard.
