John J. Loeffler, 100 years and 2 months old, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2023, at Missouri Veterans Home.
John was born in Columbus, Ohio, to John and Florence Loeffler. He and Laurene A. Eisel were married in 1945 at St. Mary's Church in Columbus. The marriage lasted for 65 years, until her death in 2010.
They lived in Columbus for more than 50 years, moving to Cape Girardeau 38 years ago.
John joined the U.S. Army at age 18. He spent World War II in the European Theater, with the 42nd Acorn Division, and participated in the Battle of the Bulge.
In civilian life, John worked at various steel and iron foundries. He was a plant superintendent for many of those years. He retired at age 62.
In retirement, he was an avid golfer, followed all University of Notre Dame sports, went to 6:30 a.m. Mass and had coffee with the guys and Florence at Burger King for many years. He constantly amazed his family with his woodworking skills, volunteered at Saint Francis Medical Center and provided daily support for his wife while she was a patient at Lutheran Home for 10 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Florence Johnson of Cape Girardeau; two sons, John (Karen) Loeffler of Pickerington, Ohio, and Gerald (Kathleen) Loeffler of Puyallup, Washington; four grandchildren, Dr. Colleen (Mark) Moore of Springfield, Illinois, Philip Johnson (Lori Lester) of Plano, Texas, Stephanie Hunt (Joel) of Upper Arlington, Ohio, and Brian Loeffler of Columbus; and six great-grandchildren, Nolan and Kinley Johnson of Plano, Stuart and Elan Moore of Springfield and Ava and Reagan Hunt of Upper Arlington.
John was preceded in death by his parents, brother, stepgrandson and son-in-law, Dr. David Johnson.
There will be no visitation.
Funeral Mass will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with the Rev. Alex Sutachan officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Cape Girardeau. Full military rites will be provided by Missouri Honors Team.
John's family would like to thank Deacon Mark Kiblinger, Saint Francis Medical Center Hospice nurses and the staff at Missouri Veterans Home for care above and beyond the call of duty.
