GOREVILLE, Ill. -- John Lavern Dawes, 71, of Goreville died Saturday, Jan. 21, 1995, at Veterans Administration Hospital in Marion.
He was born Oct. 1, 1923, at Makanda, the son of Andrew Jackson and Nellie Highland Dawes. On Dec. 23, 1956, he married Dorothy Williamson, who survives.
Other survivors include four sons, Gerald Dawes of Suffern, N.Y., Gary Dawes of Anna, Robert Dawes of Dongola and Bill Dawes of Goreville; four daughters, Linda Jackson of Anna, Marci Skelcher of Marion and Joni Foster and Tammie Burlison, both of Goreville; two sisters, Mildred Sovicke and Jackie Harmon, both of Saginaw, Mich.; a brother, Dennis Dawes of Saginaw, Mich.; 16 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
He was a veteran of World War II and a member of Anna VFW Post 3455. He also was a past commander of the Marion VFW Post 1301 and a former District 15 commander. He was a lineman and member of IBEW Local 702 at West Frankfort.
Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna, where funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Scott Harner will officiate, and burial will be at Ebenezer Hall Cemetery with full military honors by Anna VFW Post 3455.
