CAIRO, Ill. -- John R. Greenwell, 73, of Cairo died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at his home.
He was born June 7, 1926, in Cairo, son of George and Catherine Redman Greenwell.
He was a farmer in Alexander County before retiring. He had owned Redman Farms. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cairo, the Cairo Knights of Columbus Council 1027, fourth degree; Cairo Elks Lodge 651, and the Alexander-Pulaski County Farm Bureau.
He was a former member of the board of directors for First National Bank in Cairo and the Federal Land Bank. He also was a former commissioner of the North Cairo Drainage District.
Survivors include his wife, Angela, of the home; a daughter, Jann Wingfield of Natchez, Miss.; two sons, Seven Greenwell of Hopkinsville, Ky., and John Gregory Greenwell of Cairo; a brother, Charles Greenwell of Groveton, Texas; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers.
Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Saturday at Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Sunday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Jerome Fortenberry officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Villa Ridge.
