John Wellington Childers, 81, of Jackson died Saturday, March 8, 2014, at his home.
He was born March 4, 1933, in Reed, W.Va., to Charles and Pearl Kirk Childers.
John graduated from Huntington High School in Huntington, W.Va.
He served in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1959.
John then served as a police officer in Hollywood, Fla., until he retired and moved to Jackson.
He and Peggy Lea Reid were married Feb. 5, 1977. She died Sept. 13, 2013.
Survivors include a brother, Jim (Oddine) Childers of Kenova, W.Va.; a half brother, Ben (Robin) Gilbert of Lexington Park, Md.; two half sisters, Debbie (Buddy McManus) Gilbert of Charlotte, N.C., and Kathy Narcise of Huntington.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles; and a sister, Jane.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Cracraft-Miller Funeral Home in Jackson.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Janet Hopkins officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.
