John Campbell

John E. Campbell, 80, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born July 15, 1924, in Denison, Texas, son of Dayton W. and Nellie Mitchell Campbell. He and Parilee Young were married in 1947 in Sherman, Texas. She died Feb. 12, 2003.

Upon graduation from Denison High School in 1942, Campbell enlisted in the military, becoming a member of the 8th Air Force. He served as a gunner until World War II ended in 1945. Shortly thereafter he re-enlisted in the Air Force and continued service a total of 24 years before retirement.

Campbell received several Air Force commendations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters. He traveled extensively during his military career, including a post-World War II overseas tour of duty. He was a member of the Strategic Air Command in Minot, N.D.

After retiring from the military, Campbell worked at the airports in Sikeston, Mo., and Cape Girardeau, and at Havco Wood Products in Scott City.

Survivors include a sister, Sue Langdon of Denison, and a niece, Vickie Langdon of Denison.

A daughter, Marca Jean Campbell, died May 19, 1970.

A private service and burial was held at Cape County Memorial Park.

Ford and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
