Joel L. Philipps, 53, of Jackson passed away Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at his home. He was born Jan. 21, 1961, in St. Louis, son of David and Barbara Raufer Philipps. He and Carolyn Becker were married Oct. 22, 1983. Joel was a 1979 graduate of Jackson High School and received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Southeast Missouri State University in 1983. ...

Joel L. Philipps, 53, of Jackson passed away Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at his home.

He was born Jan. 21, 1961, in St. Louis, son of David and Barbara Raufer Philipps. He and Carolyn Becker were married Oct. 22, 1983.

Joel was a 1979 graduate of Jackson High School and received a bachelor's degree in business administration from Southeast Missouri State University in 1983. He owned and operated the former Philipps Carpet and Decorating in Jackson for 14 years. He was a former member of Jackson Rotary Club.

Loving survivors include his wife of 30 years, Carolyn; two sons, Christopher (Kelly) Philipps of Sikeston, Mo., and Samuel Philipps of Cape Girardeau; his parents of Jackson; twin brothers, Thomas Philipps of Jackson and Timothy (Rebecca) Philipps of Glen Carbon, Ill.; a sister, Carol (Terrance) Noud of Glen Carbon; seven nieces; and seven nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the chapel of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jim Matthews officiating. Interment will be in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.

Memorials may take the form of contributions to Muscular Dystrophy Association or the American Red Cross.
