THEBES, Ill. -- Joe W. Mason, 68, of Thebes died Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Feb. 17, 1948, in Cape Girardeau to Ernest and Hattie (Morris) Mason. He married Gabriele "Gabbie" Boettcher on May 20, 1987. She preceded him in death Oct. 6, 2014.
Joe proudly served his country during the Vietnam War.
He was a member of Cape Girardeau Post 3838 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Cape Girardeau Elks Lodge and past member of the American Legion and Eagles.
He was a retired riverboat captain with American Commercial Barge Lines. He loved fishing and attending local shooting matches.
He is survived by two daughters, Leslie Matlock of Tamms, Illinois, and Christie (Mike) Seyer of Dutchtown; a son, Joseph Mason of East Cape Girardeau, Illinois; numerous grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and two sons, Rickie Joe and James Mason.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Crain Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
Funeral services for Joe W. Mason will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Interment will follow at Lindsey Cemetery in McClure, Illinois.
Memorial contributions may be made to Cape Girardeau VFW Post 3838 and will be accepted at the funeral home.
