Joe Thomas Ayers Sr., 75, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, June 27, 2013, at Southeast Hospital.

He was born May 18, 1938, in Essex, Mo., to Lee and Odell Williams Ayers. He and Etta Louise Perkins were married May 22, 1961, in Parma, Mo.

Joe worked for Cape Vault Co. five years and then for the city of Cape Girardeau 35 years, retiring as a foreman. He attended Greater Dimension Church and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Etta Louise Ayers of Cape Girardeau; four sons, Scott (Cassandra) Ayers and Paul Ayers of Cape Girardeau, Joe (Wendy) Ayers Jr. of Euless, Texas, and Darius Ayers of Holiday, Fla.; an adopted son, Sam Smith of Philadelphia; six daughters, Tina Ayers Wright and Tiesha Johnson of Cape Girardeau, Angela Ayers, Felicia "Lisa" Ayers, Demetria Ayers and Stacie Ayers, all of Columbia, Mo.; two brothers, Charlie Ayers of Jackson and Henry Ayers of Dallas; two sisters, Hazel Jackson and Louise Colon of Cape Girardeau; 36 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Shakelia Johnson; three brothers, Ralph Ayers, Marshall Ayers and Jerry Ayers Sr.; a sister, Adell Nelson; and a grandson, Allen Murry.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Ford and Sons Sprigg Street Chapel. Masonic service will be at 7 p.m.

The funeral will be at noon Saturday at Greater Dimension Church, with the Rev. William Bird Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to the family of Joe Thomas Ayers.
