Joan Marsha Singer of Cape Girardeau passed away in her sleep over the weekend of June 20, 2020. She was 67. The cause of death is undetermined at this time.
She is the daughter of Lawrence E. and Harriet Singer of Miami (deceased). Her brother, Richard, preceded her in death, but she is survived by her older sister, Carolyn Singer Bollinger of Durango, Colorado. The two Singer sisters were inseparable friends all their lives, sharing the good times and supporting each other through the bad. Her passing leaves a hole in our lives that can never be filled.
Joan, known as 'Joanie' to her family, attended Sarah Lawrence College, The University of Miami and earned her doctoral degree in psychology at The University of Missouri. She began her career in private practice, but the bulk of her professional life was spent working for the State of Missouri Department of Human Services. A colleague commented, "I always enjoyed working with Dr. Singer; she was one of my favorites. Her calming presence and that "nod" immediately come to mind when I think of her. She will be missed."
Joanie lived in the Cape Girardeau area for nearly 40 years. She was a private person, who savored her circle of friends and loved her weekly partners-in-yoga. She was a birdwatcher who was devoted to her many animals over the years and to the caretaking of her woodland home. She also loved music and was a frequent patron of the active live-music scene in the area. A private celebration of her life will be held for friends in July.
Remembrances can be made in her name to one of her favorite charities, including The Sierra Club, The Nature Conservancy, ACLU, The Audubon Society.
