EAST CAPE GIRARDEAU, Ill. -- James Adam "Jim" Poirrier, 87, of East Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Oct. 7, 1925, in Welcome, La., to Wright and Leah Arceneaux Poirrier. He and Sophia Mae Killian were married Jan. 27, 1951, in Piggott, Ark.

Jim served in the Army during World War II under Gen. Omar Bradley in the 398th Infantry Division, Company G, 3rd Platoon.

He was a signal maintainer with Union Pacific Railroad from 1947 to 1986. He served on the board of trustees of the Village of East Cape Girardeau. He was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Cape Girardeau, life member of VFW Post 3838 and member of Elks Lodge 639 in Cape Girardeau and American Legion Post 127 in Murphysboro, Ill. Jim loved hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Sophia Poirrier of East Cape Girardeau; a daughter, LaDonna Hengst (Richard) of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Eva Mae Poirrier of Cape Girardeau; three grandchildren, Michelle Ross (Steven), LeAnne Graham (Justin), Grant Hengst; and three great-grandchildren, Alexander Turner, Anna Ross and Colton Graham.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wright "J.P." Poirrier Jr. and Louis Poirrier; and two sisters, Alice and Leona Poirrier.

There will be no visitation.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Lindsey Cemetery in McClure, Ill., with the Rev. David Hulshof officiating.

Ford and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Sister Esther Fund at Saint Francis Medical Center or Lindsey Cemetery Fund or charity of choice.
