Jessie L. "Pepaw" Smith, 70, 617 North Street, died Saturday, April 12, 1997, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

She was born Jan. 11, 1927, in Lula, Miss., daughter of Freeman and Mary Underwood Phifer Sr. She married Limmiet T. Smith July 21, 1953, in Chicago.

Smith was a cook at Southeast Missouri State University from 1969-73. She was a member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Paula Dockery of Cape Girardeau; three sisters, Fannie King of St. Louis, Cornilus Williams of Cape Girardeau, Johnnie Turner of East St. Louis, Ill.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by seven brothers and 11 sisters.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Sprigg Street Chapel from 4-8 p.m. Friday.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Bethel Church, with the Rev. Johnnie Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Lorimier Cemetery.
