Jerry Mitchell

Jerry R. Mitchell, 66, of Jackson passed away Thursday, June 17, 2004, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Aug. 24, 1937, in St. Louis, son of R.B. and Flora Mae Rose Mitchell. He and Velva "Vel" Ray were married June 16, 1956.

Jerry attended Forest Park Community College in St. Louis two years. He began working for the U.S. Postal Service in 1956, retiring as postal superintendent in 1989.

He and his family moved to Jackson in 1988 from St. Louis. He was a member of Cape First in Cape Girardeau and attended First Assembly of God Church in Jackson. He was a member of MENSA and National Association of Postal Supervisors. He enjoyed singing in the choir at Cape First, as well as listening to Southern gospel music and reading.

Loving survivors include his wife; a son, Michael Mitchell; a daughter and son-in-law, Shelby and John Stroup, all of Jackson; a brother, Thomas Mitchell of St. Louis; a sister, Audrey Wooldridge of Taft, Calif.; five grandchildren, Jessica Kooyer, Amanda Price, Ryan and Lindsay Stroup, Kelly Mitchell; and three great-grandchildren, Dylan and Alyssa Kooyer and Mackenzie Stroup.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Mitchell.

Friends may call at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Revs. Dean Heady and Charles Lance officiating. Graveside service will follow at 1:30 p.m. in Mount Hope Cemetery in St. Louis.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to First Assembly of God Church Building Fund in Jackson.
