CARROLLTON, Texas — Jerry Lloyd Matthews, 85, of Carrollton passed away Friday, Dec. 23, 2022.
He was born April 19, 1937, to Jewell Womack and Lloyd Matthews in Sikeston, Missouri.
He played basketball in high school, graduating from College High School in 1955, and attended Southeast Missouri State University.
Jerry served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Greenville, South Carolina, from 1956 to 1962, and played basketball on an Air Force team. Jerry also was in the Naval Reserve, inactive, until 1966.
He worked for the U.S. Postal Service, initially on the railroad stationed in Memphis, Tennessee, and then as a postal carrier in Cape Girardeau until he retired in 1992.
Jerry married Judith Corkins in Cape Girardeau on June 9, 1956. He later married Donna Bridges in Hot Springs, Arkansas, on Dec. 5, 1996. Jerry lived in Hot Springs Village until December 2021, when he moved to Texas to be closer to family.
Jerry is survived by his daughter, Karen (Ronnie) Fischer of The Colony, Texas; four sons, Brian (Karen) Matthews of Scott City, Kevin (Aileen) Matthews of Florence, Kentucky, Barry Matthews of Euless, Texas, and Neil (Diana) Matthews of Frisco, Texas; stepdaughter, Cindy (Jon) Jackman of Carbondale, Illinois; 12 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Matthews; brother, Jack Matthews; and parents, Jewel Perrin and Lloyd Matthews.
Jerry was a member of Village Bible Church for 25 years in Hot Springs Village. A private service will be held with family at a later date.
Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home at Frisco is in charge of arrangements.
