Gerald "Jerry" Dewey Hinton, 86, of Jackson passed away Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2023, surrounded by his family.

Jerry was born May 1, 1937, in Cape Girardeau to Dewey and Eileen Spain Hinton.

He graduated from Cape Girardeau Central High School in 1955. He played basketball and was a pitcher on the 1954 state championship baseball team. He also played baseball with the Cape Girardeau Capahas.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1959, training in San Antonio. He was stationed in Libya, Greece and Washington, D.C. He also played baseball for several armed services teams.

After returning to Cape Girardeau, Jerry worked at Marquette Cement, Day Transfer and ABF Freight, where he earned a 20-year safe driving award as a Teamster truck driver. Jerry was also a member of the Elks Lodge for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Anna R. Hinton; four sons, Gregory (Lavonne) Hinton of Wappapello, Missouri, Jon (Sandy) Hinton of Cape Girardeau, Steven (Jamie) Hinton of Jackson and David (Lesa) Hinton of Cape Girardeau; two daughters, Susan (Paul) Schuchert of New York, New York, and Laure Upchurch of Cape Girardeau; 14 grandchildren, Erika Perez, Emily Greable, Erin Upchurch, Ryan Upchurch, Kelli Adams, Kyle Hinton, Kris Hinton, Kristen Smith, Kevin Hinton, Ben Hinton, Joshua Hinton, Adam Hinton, Eli Schuchert and Maya Schuchert; and 15 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers, Henry, Terry and Michael Hinton, and two sisters, Nancy Irvine and Marsha Hinton

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Benny, Ralph and Nelson Hinton; and a sister, Carolyn Klueppel.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau, with parish prayers and a rosary at 6:30 p.m.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13, at the funeral home. Burial, with full military honors, will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.
