CHARLESTON -- Jearl Cates, 72, of Charleston died Friday, Sept. 19, 1997, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
He was born July 10, 1925, in Middlebrook, Tenn., son of John Henry and Liza Mae Belcher Cates. He and Shirley Kuykendall were married July 10, 1946, at Charleston.
Cates lived in Mississippi County most of his life. He retired from Bootheel Gas Co. in 1975. He was a member of Charleston Church of Christ. Cates served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Donald Cates of Charleston, Larry Cates of Batavia, Ohio; a daughter, Sandra Cates-Frazier of St. Charles; two brothers, Ervin Cates of Charleston, Charlie Cates of Alton; a sister, Ethel Kuykendall of Charleston; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by a brother and a grandson.
Friends may call at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston from 5-8 p.m. today.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with Phil Nuernberger officiating. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery.
