CHAFFEE, Mo. -- James Eugene "Jake" Spies Sr., 72, of Scott City died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at Chaffee Nursing Center. He was born Feb. 7, 1935, in Fornfelt, Mo., son of Charles James and Delia Ann Young Spies. He married Mary Jane Merritt on April 1, 1955, in Crab Orchard, West Va.
Spies was a heavy equipment operator for West Lake Quarry and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 573 in Cape Girardeau.
Survivors include his wife of Scott City; two sons, Mike Spies of Jackson, James Spies Jr. of Cape Girardeau; three brothers, Kenneth Spies of Scott City; Richard Spies of Holt, Mo.; Bobbie Spies of Casa Grande, Ariz.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City.
The funeral is at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Charles Lance officiating. Burial will be at Lightner Cemetery in Scott City.
