James “Jim” Edward Salzman, 84, of Cape Girardeau passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at his home and was surrounded by his loved ones.
He was born Feb. 26,1940, in Dixon, Illiois, to Louis Frederick and Evelyn Pauline Byers Salzman. He met his soulmate, Caraline Coakley, in 1956, and they were married in Dixon on April 22, 1961.
Before retirement, Jim served as the advertising manager for the Cash-Book Journal for 18 years. During his tenure, he was proud to serve the community and was able to create lifelong relationships with many of his co-workers. He considered this to be his favorite occupation.
Jim cherished spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, who he held very close to his heart.
He was a fanatical fan of Southeast Missouri State University athletics and enjoyed attending their football and basketball games, as well as serving on the Booster Club Board. Jim enjoyed a good round of golf, was a letterman on his high school football team and played league baseball in his youth.
Jim lived his life as a faithful servant of the Lord and was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church, where he loved singing in the church choir.
He also loved to travel, especially with his longtime friends, Aaron and Judy Johnson. Many of his happiest times were spent on the road with them, meeting new people and seeing new places.
He loved to socialize and was always eager to enjoy a conversation with new and old friends.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Caraline Coakley Salzman of Cape Girardeau; three sons, Mark Salzman of St. Louis, Andrew (Kaoru Ishiyama) Salzman of Seattle and Matthew Salzman of Imperial; two grandchildren, Zoey Salzman and Landon Salzman; sister, Jane (Michael) Kreider of Rochelle, Illinois; brother-in-law, R. Michael (Myra Neeley) Coakley of Shelbyville, Tennessee; niece, Katrina Kreider of Lindenwood, Illinois; and nephew, Corey (Susie) Kreider of Rochelle.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Monday, Aug. 12, at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
A celebration of life will be at noon Monday, Aug. 12, at the funeral home, with Chaplain Fred Burgard officiating.
Memorial contributions may be given to Saint Francis Hospice.
