ZALMA, Mo. -- James C. Merchant, 78, of Zalma died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at the John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
He was born May 9, 1924, at Haileville, Okla., son of William and May Crowder Merchant.
He was a former resident of Madison, Ill., before moving to Zalma 13 years ago. He was a retired maintenance man for Marhan Trucking in Madison. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Survivors include one son; two daughters; special friend, Joy French of Zalma; four stepsons, Fred Tanner of Madison, and William, David and Ronald Tanner, all of Granite City, Ill.; one stepdaughter, Janet Thorton of Granite City; one half brother, Bob Wilson of Madison; one sister, Tiny Smith of Madison; and five stepgrandchildren.
Friends may call at Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Puxico, Mo., after 11:30 a.m. today.
Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. today in New Hope Cemetery near McGee, Mo., with the Rev. Larry Underwood officiating. Full military honors will be provided by the Veterans Honor Guard of Poplar Bluff.
