THEBES, Ill. -- James J. Simmons, 71, Thebes Route 1, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 1994, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

He was born Oct. 7, 1922, in Vienna, son of Roy and Ida Corzine Simmons. He and Stella Prewitt were married May 28, 1946, in Cape Girardeau.

Simmons was owner/operator of Jim's Convenient Mart. He was a member of the Church of God at Gale, and Carroll P. Foster VFW Post 3455 in Anna. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, receiving the American Area Victory Medal and Asiatic Pacific with three stars.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Kim Snell of Cape Girardeau, Becky Butcher of Olive Branch; two brothers, William Simmons of McClure, Roy Simmons of Thebes; three sisters, Marie Snell of Thebes, Reba Edwards of Cape Girardeau, Sharon Reynolds of Urbana, and three grandchildren.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Sprigg Street Chapel in Cape Girardeau from 4-8 p.m. today.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Ernest Brown officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery at Thebes, with graveside rites by the VFW.
