James J. "Jim" Hopen, 70, 1738 Luce, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1993, at St. Francis Medical Center.
He was born April 13, 1923, at Jefferson City, son of Emil and Minnie Hoelscher Hopen. He and Betty Sue Johnson were married Oct. 10, 1944, in Jefferson City.
Hopen worked for Conoco Oil Co. 10 years, Todt Sheeet Metal 18 months, and was an insurance agent with New York Life 30 years, retiring in 1989.
He was a member of St. Vincent's Catholic Church, president of Holy Name Society, national director of Cape Jaycees in 1958, president of Kiwanis Club 1968-69, fund drive chairman for Otahki Girl Scout Council four years, served on the New York Life Agent Advisory Council in 1976, and had been a Republican ward committeeman.
Hopen was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Thomas Hopen of Lawrenceville, Ga., Michael and Robert Hopen of Cape Girardeau, Stephen Hopen of Sikeston; five daughters, Mary Drum of Affton, Linda Shelton of Sikeston, Susan Carlson of Virginia Beach, Va., Judith Hopen of St. Louis, Carolyn Davis of Jackson; a brother, Delbert Hopen of Clearwater, Fla.; eight grandchildren, and two stepgrandchildren.
Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Vincent's Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel from 4-8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Parish prayers will be at 7:30.
