James Robert Householder, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and respected veteran, passed away peacefully at his home Wednesday, May 24, 2023, at the age of 93.
Born Dec. 22, 1929, in Pollard, Arkansas, James was the son of the late Nolen "Buck" and Nora White Householder. He was the second of 10 children.
James resided in Jackson with his beloved wife of 65 years, Nina Garner Householder. Their commitment to one another was an inspiration to all who knew them.
As a young boy at only 8 years old, James began driving a team of horses and plowing cotton in Arkansas to help support his family. James eventually embarked on a journey, working in wheat fields across various states. Later, he bravely answered the call to serve his country after being drafted into the Army, where he fought in the Korean War.
After completing his military service, James' path intersected with Nina's in Madison, Illinois. They exchanged vows July 9, 1957, and began a lifelong partnership. In 1959, they purchased what would become the Householder Farm in Glen Allen, Missouri. This farm became the cornerstone of their lives, where they raised their children and created long-lasting memories with their grandchildren.
James' hands, weathered and strong, silently conveyed his life's narrative and were a testament to the life he lived. A skilled heavy equipment operator, he dedicated himself to both the family farm and his union work with Operating Engineers and as a construction worker with the United Mine Workers of America, where he retired. Even in retirement, James maintained an unwavering work ethic and continued to pour his heart and soul into his land working the farm, tending to the cattle and traveling the fields in his rusty but trusty 1965 flatbed Ford pickup until he was 91.
In the rare moments he allowed himself, James indulged in his passions. He found solace in watching classic westerns, attending farm auctions and horse races and spending peaceful hours pond fishing. He took great pleasure in passing down his skills and knowledge to his children and grandchildren. A competitive game of poker or dominoes was always a cherished pastime for him.
James' soft-spoken demeanor concealed an undeniable force; even at 93, he possessed a quiet strength that resonated in every aspect of his being and shaped his character. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, love for his family and an unmeasurable connection to the land he nurtured. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Nina; his three children, Robert Householder, Jeffrey (Teresa) Householder and Karen (Rich) McCall; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Loretta Householder; and several nieces and nephews.
James was predeceased by his mother, father and eight siblings.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon, with funeral to follow, Wednesday, May 31, at Ford and Sons Funeral Home, 1001 Mount Auburn Road in Cape Girardeau. Burial will take place at Grassy Friendship Cemetery in Grassy, Missouri. Graveside military rites will be provided by the Missouri Honors Team.
