CHARLESTON -- Funeral service for James E. Cates of Charleston will be held at 11 a.m. today at McMikle Funeral Chapel in Charleston. The Rev. Bill Meeks will officiate, with burial in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Cates, 71, died Sunday, March 12, 1995, at his home.

He was born March 29, 1923, in Doniphan, son of John Henry and Liza Mae Belcher Cates. He and Margaret McMillen were married March 13, 1947.

Cates was employed at Brown Shoe Co. 32 years. He was a member of the Baptist Church in Doniphan, VFW Post 4294, and Disabled American Veterans. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, James Cates Jr. of Edgar Springs, Lee Cates of House Springs; three brothers, Ervin and Jearl Cates of Charleston, Charlie Cates of Tarkio; a sister, Ethel Kuykendall of Charleston; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
