James Chenoweth

James D. "J.D." Chenoweth, 79, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

He was born Jan. 30, 1925, in Burfordville, son of David E. and Mary "Rosetta" Johnson Chenoweth. He and Ruth Woods were married Aug. 20, 1943, at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946.

James was a 1943 graduate of Woodland High School in Marble Hill, Mo. After his military service he owned and operated an insurance agency in Cape Girardeau for more than 50 years, representing National Life of Vermont.

His other achievements include designation and certification as a lifetime charter life underwriter, lifetime member of the Million Dollar Round Table, past president and co-founder of the River Heritage Association of Insurance and Financial Advisers, and co-founder of LUPAC.

He was a member of Post Oak Congregational Methodist Church in Patton, Mo., the American Legion Post in Cape Girardeau, and Cape Noon Lions Club.

James had a great love for the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and especially enjoyed fishing.

Loving survivors include his wife, Ruth of Cape Girardeau; a son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Barbara Chenoweth of Jackson; four daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Foster Hampton of Knoxville, Tenn., Jeanie and David Proctor, Donna and Robert Pritchard, Teri and Jeff Thomas, all of Cape Girardeau.

Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, Elizabeth Trahan, Ruth Hampton, Amy, Andrea and Kipp Proctor, Holly and Paige Pritchard, Derek Chenoweth and wife Angie, Greg Chenoweth, Erica and Baret Vickery; and two great-grandchildren, Christopher and Joshua Trahan.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call today from 4 to 8 p.m. at McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Scott Moon officiating. Interment will be in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson, with graveside military honors.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.
