JONESBORO, Ill. -- James E. "Cub" Charles, 73, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997, at St. Francis Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 25, 1924, at McClure, son of James M. and Bessie Mae Trammel Charles. He married Bonetta Marie Goleaner on June 17, 1942, in Jackson, Mo.

He worked as a bricklayer, retiring in 1979. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Bricklayers Local 8 of Murphysboro since the 1950s. He was of the Pentecostal faith.

Survivors include his wife; five sons, James Jr. of McClure, Jerry of Owensboro, Ky., Donald of Dongola, and Ron and David, both of Jonesboro; two daughters, Sharon Phillips of Clarksville, Tenn., and Deborah Hengst of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Paul Charles of Chicago; two sisters, Helen Baughman of Havana and Ida Downing of Lewiston; 21 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter.

Friends may call at Hileman & Parr Funeral Home in Jonesboro from 4 to 8 p.m. today.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Herbert Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the Valley Mission Cemetery.
