DEXTER, Mo. -- James M. Carlton, son of the late Millard Carlton and Margie Corlies Carlton, was born Sunday, Dec. 18, 1938, in Dexter and departed this life Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016, in Cypress Point Skilled Nursing Center in Dexter at the age of 77.

Carlton was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, chief of maintenance with the National Park Service, a member of Lighthouse Christian Center and a resident of Dexter.

He was united in marriage to Lynn Velander on June 4, 1966, in Cape Girardeau. She preceded him in death April 19, 2016.

Survivors include a son, Dan (Tracy) Carlton of Clayton, North Carolina; two daughters, Julie Carlton (Bill) Pace of River Falls, Wisconsin, and Cynthia Carlton (Dwayne) Mosbey of Licking, Missouri; a sister, Mary Medlock of Fruitland; four grandchildren, Zayden Carlton, Levi Carlton, Shaley Mosbey and Theron Mosbey; and two great-grandchildren, Dean Mosbey and Alana Mosbey.

Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Jeannie Olive.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Lighthouse Christian Center in Dexter.

The funeral service will be at noon Friday at Lighthouse Christian Center, with the Rev. Tim Russell officiating. Interment will be in the Missouri State Veteran Cemetery in Bloomfield.

Rainey Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter was in charge of arrangements.
