JACKSON -- Walton D. "Jack" Sykes, 90, of Jackson died Thursday, Oct. 23, 1997, at his home.
He was born Sept. 6, 1907, in Stewart County, Ky., son of W.D. andSally C. Ford Sykes Jr. He and Mary Miles Swick were married Oct. 10, 1990.
Sykes received a bachelor of arts degree in education from Murray State University in Murray, Ky., in 1939.
He taught in Stewart County schools, and during World War II he taught at Henry Ford Trade School. He later worked with two of his brothers at Sykes Brothers Lumber Co. in Murray for 25 years. He was also an inspector four years with TVA, retiring in 1972. He was a member of First Christian Church in Murray.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, David Sykes of Lowell, Ind., Frank Sykes of Austin, Texas; a daughter, Nancy Cockerham of Florida; a stepson, Bill Swick of Imperial; a stepdaughter, Patricia Jasinski of Alpena, Mich.
Also surviving are five sisters, Vara Walles, Hazel Lancaster and Rebecca Wilford of Clarksville, Tenn., Helen Patrige of Alabama, Robbye Littlejon of Paducah, Ky.; a brother, Blaine Sykes of Utah; a half brother, Patrick Sykes of San Diego, Calif.; six granddaughters; and five stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, a half brother, and a sister.
Friends may call at Blalock-Coleman Funeral Home in Murray from 6-9 p.m. today.
Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. David Roose officiating. Burial will be in Murray Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
McCombs Funeral Home at Jackson was in charge of local arrangements.
