DEXTER, Mo. -- Funeral for John S. "Jack" Smarr of Dexter will be held at 3 p.m. today at Rainey Funeral Home. The Rev. Vaughn Wright will officiate. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until time of service.
Smarr, 79, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at Dexter Memorial Hospital.
He was born Aug. 17, 1921, at Marshall, Mo., son of John S. and Stella Blanche Miles Smarr Sr. He and Elsie Greenfield were married Dec. 27, 1946, in Cape Girardeau. She died Aug. 9, 1997.
Smarr was a former maintenance supervisor with Dexter Public Schools. He was Ward 2 city alderman many years and was recognized as Dexter's Man of the Year in 1975.
He was a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and the Korean War. He was a first sergeant with the 359th Fighter Squadron and was awarded six Bronze Stars.
Survivors include his self-adopted family: Mike and Gail Clippard of Dexter, Michael Clippard of Memphis, Tenn., Brandon Clippard of Jonesboro, Ark., and Lynn Hassell of Dexter.
He was preceded in death by a sister.
