BERTRAND, Mo. -- Jack Gordon Chapman, 73, of Bertrand was called to his Heavenly Father Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011.
He was born Dec. 6, 1937, in DeKalb, Texas, to Albert Benjamin "A.B." and Clarice Clark Chapman.
His love and passion for woodworking began as a young man. He graduated from Anniston High School in 1956 where he was a member of the basketball team. After graduating, Jack began his career in the hardware and lumber business as a bookkeeper at Byrd's Lumber Co.
After many years of service, with his dream of starting his own business, Jack owned and operated Mississippi County Lumber Co. until it closed in 1981. He was then offered a senior sales consultant position at E.C. Barton Co. of Sikeston, Mo., and later was manager until his retirement.
Jack was a member of Southside Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher. He was a Boy Scouts leader, member of the Kiwanis Club, and a member of Masonic Lodge where he held a 32nd Degree. He also sponsored Little League Baseball and enjoyed taking the team to an end-of-the-season St. Louis Cardinals game.
His favorite hobbies included spending time with his family, boating and camping, woodworking, collecting and refinishing antiques and gardening.
Jack and his high school sweetheart, Barbara Ann Jackson, were married Dec. 29, 1956.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three children, Bruce and Marilyn Chapman of East Prairie, Mo., Judi Rollins of Cape Girardeau, Brice and Michelle Chapman of Ava, Mo.; nine grandchildren, Micah Givens, Bruce Chapman II, Natalie Wescoat, Christopher Chapman, Maryssa Whitaker, Rebecca Rollins, Katherine Rollins, Benjamin Chapman, Caroline Rollins; six great-grandchildren, Hayli Chapman, Meridyth Givens, Peyton Givens, Lauren Wescoat, Bella Chapman and Hayden Whitaker.
Also a sister, Janeen Cheatham and husband Bryce of Magnolia, Ark.; a sister-in-law, Carol Chapman of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; father-in-law, Harvie Jackson of East Prairie; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Watson and husband Billy of Charleston, Mo., Janice Nolen and husband Jimmy of Bertrand.
Among all of Jack's achievements, his family was his greatest pride and love.
Preceding him in death were his parents; stepmother, Louise Chapman; two brothers, Alan Benjamin and Roger Chapman; a sister, Andrea Chapman; and a son-in-law, Robbie Rollins.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Michael Brewer, pastor of First Baptist Church in Charleston, officiating. Interment will be in IOOF Cemetery near Charleston.
Pallbearers will be Max Carlyle, Charles Jackson, Larry Miller, Lowell Nally, George Pazdera, Wallace Reeves, Donnie Sams and Bud Small.
